Who Is Amal Clooney?

Amal Clooney is a Lebanese-born British barrister at Doughty Street Chambers. Amal specializes in international law and human rights. Some of her clients include Maria Ressa, a co-founder of Raooler, Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in his legal fight against extradition.

In addition, she also represented Yulia Tymoshenko, a former Ukraine Minister, Mohamed Fahmy, an Egyptian-Canadian journalist, and Nadia Murad, a Novel Prize. The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office appointed her as a special envoy for media freedom in 2019. However, Amal stepped down from this position in 2020. She is married to George Clooney, a film actor, and director.

She is a qualified lawyer practicing in the United States and the United Kingdom. Moreover, she was called at the New York bar in 2002, and England Wales in 2010. Furthermore, she has also practiced at international courts in The Hague, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

After that, she worked in The Hague at the Prosecutor’s Office at the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon and at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Amal later returned to Columbia Law School for the spring 2018 term as a co-professor on a fundamental human rights class alongside Sarah H. Cleveland.

Notable Cases

In 2011, she was helping the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the arbitration between Merck Sharp and Dohme and the Republic of Ecuador. Furthermore, Amal started representing Canadian Al Jazeera English journalist Mohamed Fahmy. Mohammed was being jailed in Egypt alongside other journalists, in 2014. However, Mohamed was eventually sentenced to three years in jail and lost a retrial in August 2015 before being pardoned by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

in August 2014 she turned down a UN commission to investigate suspected violations of the rules of war in Gaza during the 2014 Gaza conflict. Moreover, in October 2014 she was involved in an attempt to return the Elgin Marbles, which are ancient Greek artworks.
Greece decided to halt legal procedures to retrieve the artworks in May 2015 and fired her as their counsel.

Amal started working for the acknowledgment of the Armenian genocide in January 2015. Furthermore, she is also representing Armenia on behalf of Doughty Street Chambers, together with  Geoffrey Robertson QC. Amal stated that Turkey’s stance was hypocritical “because of its disgraceful record on freedom of expression,” including prosecutions of Turkish-Armenians who advocated for the 1915 massacres to be classified as genocide.

Moreover, Amal is defending Armenian in a lawsuit against Dou Perinçek. whose 2007 conviction for genocide denial and racial discrimination was overturned in Perinçek v. Switzerland in 2013. Before the 28 January 2015 hearing, her bon mot sparked a “small online frenzy.” In answer to a journalist’s question about what designer gown she would be wearing in court, she responded by saying ” Ede & Ravenscroft”- the tailor who makes her court robes.

Clooney filed a case against the Government of the Republic of the Philippines before the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, a body under the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, on March 8, 2015, for the continued detention of former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

At the time she was filling the lawsuit Arroyo was a congresswoman from Pampanga. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Incarceration later issued a statement on 2 October, stating that former President Arroyo’s detention “violates international law” and is “arbitrary for a variety of reasons.”
