Alfred Schreuder Club Career
During his career, he played for RKC Waalaijk, NAC Breda, Feyenoord, FC TGwente, and Vitessea. After he had stopped playing for FC Twente in March 2008, he went on and joined SDV Barneveld on an amateur basis. He then returned as a professional football player after about three months, signing a contract for one year at Vitesse. In January 2009, he retired.
A Managerial Career
After his retirement, he started his managerial career immediately as assistant manager of Vitesse. In the summer of 2009, he signed with FC Twente to be the assistant manager of Steve McClaren. On February 26, 2013, he was appointed as interim manager after his resignation. However, the club officially appointed Michel Jansen as head coach in March 2013, and Alfred as his assistant.
This was because Alfred was not yet appropriately licensed as a manager. This arrangement continued for the 2013-14 season. While Alfred was studying for the UEFA Pro Licence, which he obtained in May 2014. Subsequently, he was installed as a manager of FC Twente, with Jansen as his assistant. However, he was sacked on August 30, 2015, after winning one point in the first four matches of the 2015-16 season. Next, he was appointed the assistant manager of Huub Stevens at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on October 26, 2015.
Managerial Continuation
After his resignation on February 10, 2016, he remained at the club as the assistant of Julian Nagelsmann. It was announced on January 5, 2018, that Ajax had reached an agreement with Hoffenheim to sign Alfred as the assistant of their new head coach Erik ten Hag. It was then announced in March 2019, that he would succeed Julian Nagelsmann as head of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim from July 1, 2019, after signing a contract until 2022. However, on June 9, 2022, he was sacked by the club, since his form was not up to the expectations of the board.
In August 2020, he went on to join FC Barcelona as assistant manager under Ronald Koeman. Both signed a two-year deal with an escape-clause option after the first year. On January 3, 2022, he was appointed as head coach of Club Brugge, replacing Philippe Clement who left to manage Monaco. After winning the Belgian League, he was appointed by Ajax on a two-year contract from the 2022-23 season onwards, replacing Erik ten Hag who left to manage Manchester United. However, due to poor results, he was sacked from his position at Ajax on January 26, 2023.
