Grinch began his coaching career at the University of Missouri as a graduate assistant in 2002. He served there under the head coach, Gary Pinkel until 2004. He landed his first regular assistant coaching job under Sean McDonnell at Division I-AA New Hampshire. Grinch served as the cornerback’s coach in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He received a promotion to a recruiting coordinator and coached the whole defensive secondary in 2007 and 2008.
From New Hampshire, Grinch landed a new job at Wyoming and served for three seasons as the recruiting coordinator and coaching the secondary. Grinch returned to Missouri in 2012 and served as the safeties coach under Gary Pinkel until 2014.
Mike Leach hired Grinch in 2015. He served as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Washington State until the end of the 2017 season. Grinch landed a job at Ohio State under Urban Meyer in 2018 and served as a co-defensive coordinator.
Lincoln Riley hired Grinch in January 2018 as a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma. The USC Trojans football program hired Riley in November 2021 as their new head coach. Riley then hired Grinch as his defensive coordinator.
