A College Career
While at college as a freshman, he averaged 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game playing in 34 games. But in his freshman year, he was diagnosed with permanently reduced lung capacity, an ailment that affected his stamina. He led his team the Spartans in his sophomore season in blocks (39) and finished in the Big 10. Overall in his sophomore season, in 37 games (36 starts), he averaged7.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. In addition, he was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
His college performance went on to succeed as he led the Big Ten in free-throw percentage (.848) as a junior and blocked a total of 46 shots. In 36 games (24 starts), he averaged 10.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in 25.6 minutes per game. A Career with the Atlanta Hawks (2014 to 2015)
In the 2014 NBA draft, he was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 15th overall pick on June 26, 2014. He went on and signed his rookie contract with the Hawks on July 25, after averaging 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds during the 2014 NBA Summer League. After 5 preseason games for the Hawks, he was ruled out for the start of the regular season because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
And because of his injury, he missed the first ten games of the season. Upon his return on November 20, he was assigned to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League. The Hawks recalled him on November 23, reassigned him on November 28, then recalled him again on December 6. He was again reassigned on December 9, but then again recalled on December 22 going on to make his long-awaited NBA debut four days later against the Milwaukee Bucks. However, in 13 minutes of action, he recorded 2 points and 3 rebounds as the Hawks lost 107-77.
A Career with the Minnesota Timberwolves 2015 to 2017
Payne was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on February 10, 2015, in exchange for a protected future first-round pick. While starting in place of Kevin Garnett, on March 9, 2015, he had a season-best game with 16 points and 15 rebounds in an 89-76 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Timberwolves on October 21, 2015, exercised their third-year team option on Payne’s rookie scale contact thus extending the contract through the 2016-17 season. Using the flexible assignment rule, on January 25, 2016, he was assigned to the Erie BayHawks the D-League affiliate of the Orlando Magic. On February 1, he was recalled by the Timberwolves. He signed a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic on August 21, 2017.
